Floors Castle estate provided the venue for the East District Cross-Country Relays on Saturday. Gala Harriers were well represented with three men’s teams and four ladies teams taking part.

Gala ladies were defending the title they won last year but they were up against some very determined opposition from Lothian RC, Edinburgh Woollen Mill and Central AC.

Gala’s ‘A’ team was led off by Suzanne Carson, who ran the second fastest time of the day to hand over to Katy Anderson in first place. Katy was running her first district race for the club and did well to hand over to Tish Affleck in second place, having been overtaken by Lothian RC. Tish put in a fine performance but had to accept third place when internationalist Morag MacLarty stormed round the course in the fastest time of the day to take the title for Central AC.

Gala’s ‘B’ team finished very strongly and Andrea Pogson, Laura Howie and Sally Barr, were delighted to take fourth place. Angela Foss, Karen Renton and Nicola Meikle took the ‘C’ team to a creditable 11th spot, while Marion Facchini had to run the course twice to enable the ladies ‘D’ team to claim 13th place, with the help of Anna White.

It was a good turnout for the men’s team with Gala Harriers finishing in 12th, 14th and 20th positions, the overall race winners being Favorit RC with Scottish International Glen Stewart running the winning anchor leg.

Gala’s A team was led off by Mark Bryson, followed by Rob McCrirrick, Euan Jardine and, on the anchor leg, Ron Logan who was just pipped to the post in a furious run-in with Teviotdale Harriers B team.

The B team comprised Martin Clarke, Struan King, Fergus Johnston and Iain Arnott and the C team: Alistair Laurie, Graham Capper, Dave Nightingale and George Runciman.
