Gala Harriers Beef it up at Moffat
July 15th, 2003Tuesday night is one of the training nights for the harriers but a few brave souls decided to give running up Wylies Brae and Dean Street a miss and take on the Devil’s Beef Tub at Moffat instead. The Moffat Beef Tub race must be one of the most scenic in Scotland and attracts around 200 runners from both sides of the border. The race starts with a gently rising four mile run out through the countryside roads to the bottom of the Beef Tub and then gets really tough as the runners take on a steep farm track for a mile before reaching the top. The best part of the race is a glorious four and a half mile run back down the main road into Moffat and the finish.
Martin Clarke produced another very good run, finishing 15th in 61.12 and just held off the fast improving Brian Bailey who pushed Martin all the way to finish 18th in a time of 61.31.
Robin Murray ran a steady race in the hot conditions to finish 35th in 64.30, with Laura Howie not too far behind in 65th position in a time of 70.33. Laura’s efforts were rewarded with a third place finish in the ladies prize list. Last home for the harriers but by no means last in the race was Ruth McCann who finished in a creditable time of 81.00 and 120th place.
