Gala Harriers 10K Selected as District Championships

March 10th, 2003

Following on from the success of last years Centenary 10K road race, Gala Harriers have decided to make it an annual event, with this years race taking place on the 20th of April.
There will be a junior fun run at 11.30 am, setting off from Gala Rugby Club at Netherdale, followed by the main 10K road race at 1.00 pm. The race has again been chosen to be the East District 10K Championships, which should ensure a good turn out from athletes throughout the east of Scotland, with some of Scotland’s best road runners taking part.

Posters and entry forms will be on display in local schools, sports centres and shops throughout the region this week for anyone looking for information on the race. They can also contact the race administrator on phone number 01896 758436 for race details.

Gala Harriers would like to invite as many locals as possible to compete for the trophy for first local runner in the race and encourage the town’s primary school pupils to come and give the fun run a go.

Gala Harriers has been successful in obtaining a grant from UK Athletics to help them continue to develop athletics in and around the Galashiels area. In the last two years the harriers have been able to increase the number of qualified coaches in the club to seven, with more interested members keen to take part in training courses.

Club coach Neil Renton is now working towards his Level 4 coaching certificate where he is gaining in reputation in Scotland due to his commitment and his enthusiasm for athletics.

Junior training at Tweedbank Track will start again from Thursday 27th of March, children of all abilities are welcome to come and give athletics a try. Each session starts at 6.15 pm and will involve a small cost for each child, to cover the use of the track and its facilities.
