East Districts Cross-Country League

November 30th, 2002

Gala Harriers had a good turn out of runners on Sunday to take on the
second of the East District XC league races held at Kirkaldy. As usual
hosts Fife AC set out a tough and testing course for the 195 athletes
in the men’s race, combining roads, hill trails, fields and parkland.
First home as usual was Ron Logan in 26th place, well ahead of team mates
Alistair Laurie 60th, Martin Clarke 70th, Dave Nightingale 80th, Robin
Murray 83rd, Graham Capper 105th and Colin Christison 118th.

This was also a selection race for the forthcoming Inter District Championships
to be held at Holyrood Park, Edinburgh on the 14th of December. It was
with this in mind that Suzanne Carson, Laura Howie and Nicola Alexander
lined up with another 53 ladies from around the district to take on their
4.6 km parkland course. With only the first six finishers sure of selection,
Suzanne performed excellently finishing in 5th to secure her place. Laura
ran a well judged race all the way round and finished a creditable 18th,
while Nicola also improved on her last race by finishing 36th, to help
the ladies team retain their 5th place position in the league.

The U17 boy’s race was run at the same time as the ladies and Gary Alexander
was well chuffed to finish in front of Suzanne this time but maybe not
with the other twelve boys who finished in front of him. Steven Laurie
was the only harrier to guarantee his selection for the district team
by turning in a typically gutsy performance to finish 7th out of the 48
runners in the U13’s race, with the first 9 boy’s going to Holyrood.
